Formal analysis of masculinity

First photo

  • plain white backround
  • man grasping the woman's neck and chin tightly
  • both are wearing sunglasses
  • looks as if the man is about to speak to the woman
  • both seem very high end/yuppy like
  • Not many words on the ad
  • logo is on the bottom
  • the woman seems to be looking away from the man
  • the woman also seems as if she is pouting
  • He has his right hand on her neck(sometimes the right hand can signify strength and power)
  • the photo is focused in on the upper body of both the man and woman

Second photo

  • Man is standing up over the woman
  • man is the focus woman is in the backround
  • Women is laying suggestively on the bed
  • Geared towards men as the statement says "for the benefit of mankind"
  • has a short paragraph at the bottom of the ad
  • man is in underarmor underwear
  • the man is rather uncommonly muscular
  • it seems as if they had sex
  • It almost seems as if she is mesmorized by the guy or in fact she could just be staring right into the camera that took the shot
  • most of the backround is pretty plain (white walls, brick, a picture)
  • the bed sheets aren't ordinary, they are a glossy silver
  • the logo is in the top right of the ad and the girl is also on the right
  • it is almost like the woman is being showcased
Similarities-

- All pictures are dealing with men
- All the pictures seem to be focused on self gratification
- One thing that is common is that most all of them have differing views on what it means to be a male
- 4 out of the 5 are trying to sell something

  1. I like the similarities that you have picked out of these photos, you put it very well on your 3rd point. It seems as though male dominance is being used to sell these products, and by looking at the brands, it's obviously working for the companies.

  2. Self-grtification is an interesting way of terming the use of Under Armour and other brands using such advertising. As Alexandra said, its obviously working for these brands, especially Under Armour which is competing at a national level with Nike. Interesting point to be made about college football- battle of the brands- national championship game 2010: Auburn (UA) vs. Oregon (NIKE poster school).
