Formal Analysis

* Bright large letters that stand out in front of the black background next to the child.
* An image behind the child of what could be the boys mother.
* Woman is shown happy and smoking.
* The boy in front of the shadow seems sad.
* Arm is slouching with his hand rested on his face.
* Big brown eyes really pull out the sadness in his face.
* The boy is wearing a white shirt that seems to blend into the image behind him.
* This could symbolize that the mother and boy share the habit together because she smokes around him: Secondhand kills.

* Many white crosses that take up most of the ad.
* Crosses are bigger in the front and smaller in the back to portray the illusion that they are many crosses.
* The grass is bright green.
* There is a small space in the middle of the crosses where there are no crosses.
* non smoking area words are in the middle of the green grass where no crosses are distributed.

Connections:
* They all have images that provide information that smoking kills.
* The two secondhand smoke ads portray a feeling of quilt for those that smoke around their family.
* The individual smoking ads place an emphasis on how many people die in relation to non smokers and how bad their body is effected.
* The lung image shows that cigarettes are the structure of a smokers lungs.
* The bride ad is a photo a someones wife and has a large cigarette being put out on her heart.
* The boy ad and the bride ad both represent the lack of control that they have because of the family that smokes around them.
* The lung ad and the crosses ad both represent that when you smoke your lungs will be non functioning over time and you will end up as one of the white crosses.
* The commercial of the boy losing his mother is also connected with the boy ad and the bride ad because he has no control and no hope in finding his mother alone.
* The commercial also uses the boy crying as an outreach to mothers that smoke.
* The dark and light shadows are represented in the boy, bride, and lung ad.

  1. I think you chose your advertisements very wisely because I think they all cause a negative reaction from the viewer, or at least for me this was the case. All of the still advertisements really use their initial shock element to grab the viewer's attention so they can possibly make an impact on the viewer and their relationship with cigarettes. The commercial also gives a similiar, strong effect as it focuses on the small, innocent boy lost among many people; I know for me, my heart sank when I watched this video. Connecting to the audience and causing that reaction is very important in the success of these ads because they are not trying to sell anything, but rather stop a certain behavior.

  2. I think that the video aspect is an incredibly effective advertisement. It provides parents with a feeling, that although sad, is known to many- the fear of losing your child. I think it would drive home a message about smoking and the hurt it would not only put on the child of the situation if a parent passed away due to smoking, but also to the parent themselves, the hurt they know they would feel.
