Miller Lite Ad

*truck door opens with miller lite logo on it.
*the door reveals a bar where everyone is drinking only miller lite
* everyone is well dressed in fairly formal attire, a illusion of a level of class to this establishment
*appears to be quite a few more women visible in the scene then men
*male character revealed in a formal blue button up shirt. Male also seems somewhat fit. Male has a strap around his shoulder.
*male asks for light beer, seems to have mildly dopey mannerisms
* camera switch: bar tender- female in black formal dress asks if he cares how the beer tastes.
* camera switch: back to male: male responds that he doesn't care how his beer tastes
* camera switch: Female bartender: look of amusement on her face, she cracks open a beer that has a very generic looking label. The label has a grey background and very standard looking text saying, light beer. She then sets it in front of the guy while saying when you start caring put down your purse and I'll give you a miller lite
*camera switch: closeup view of male: male looks surprised, camera travels slightly to the right to allow you to notice that the attractive female to his left is now looking at the male, camera then moves down where the male then pulls out his bag that had been concealed up to this point.
* camera switch: camera has pulled back to original view of the male from the start of the commercial. female to his left is staring at his bag, male is looking at the bartender with some indignation saying that his bag is a carry on.
*camera switch: back to female bartender, has a look on her face that seems to say "your in denial" she then says to his response simply no its not
* camera switch: male looks somewhat beat and unsure how to respond and walks off. Meanwhile female to his left is no longer looking at him and seems to be mildly amused. Bar tender remains in her position. Background masculine voice starts speaking "Man up, because if your drinking a light beer without great pilsner taste, your missing the point of driking a beer"
* scene switch: wheat emblem in center of beer funnel rotating while voice continues "grab a triple hop miller light"
*scene switch: miller emlem with saturation on the background, beer slides across ice and reveals the words taste greatness while the voice verbally states it.
*scene switch: man is sitting next to his two guy friends at a table, male concedes and says he's going to get a miller lite. Bag is on the table. While the guy starts to stand up, his friend says I'll watch your purse. Guy, mildly irratated says, Its a carry on
Scene ends with the miller truck door closing

Old Spice Ad

Scene: Old spice male, very fit, light beard on face. gray towel with blue stripes around his waist. He is standing in a bathroom and the shower is on behind him.
Old spice male speaks "hello Ladies (camera is slowly moving towards him) look at your man now back to me now back to your man now back to me" "sadly he isn't me but if he stopped using lady scented body wash and switched to old spice he could smell like he's me"
background setting begins to lift, old spice man looks down and says "look down, back up, where are you"
scene reveals that he is on a boat, a scarf has fallen onto his neck. Camera has zoomed back a ways to show you this scene
"your on a boat with the man your man could smell like" old spice man is walking across the boat while camera zooms in on him. While walking he is to the left of the camera, when he stops he is in center frame
"whats in your hand, back to me, I have it, its a oyster with two tickets to that thing you love"
old spice lifts up a oyster which reveals two tickets. Old spice man has his back to the left side of the frame, camera is giving extra room on right side to emphasis what he has in his hand.
oyster falls out of his hand to reveal diamonds which start pouring through his fingers
"look again, the tickets are now diamonds"
Old spice body wash starts to emerge form his hand
"anything is possible when your man smells like old spice and not a lady, I'm on a horse"
camera zooms out to reveal he is on a white horse on the beach.
old spice music is in background and text appears that says "SMELL LIKE A MAN, MAN". "Old Spice" is written in cursive. As camera zooms back it moves slightly to the left to emphasize horse.

Connections:
All the ads use fit attractive males
All make a comment on masculinity
emphasis made on how fit the men are while also emphasizing masculinity
intended interpretations are for viewers to feel inferior to models
emphasis on product is always used to either prove or promote ones masculinity
two different major themes noticed through the ads
ads either say that their product will make you more like this manly man OR
insinuate that you are more manly then this physicaly fit person (miller beer, nike, and airline example) by using our product. Their inferiority is either emphasized with them either "acting" like a women or insinuating that they have homosexual tendencies.
Black males are used in a number of the Ads for a promotion of masculinity. It is no secret that they are drawing upon a already established stereotype that black men are more violent visa via more masculine (used especially in nike photo to emphasis embarrassment and the demasculization of our model when the guy puts his groin on his face).

  1. I think the way you interpreted these ads are very interesting. The guys are seen as dominant and manly. Also, I like how you did the connection between all the ads because when I look at them, I do see what you are seeing too.

  2. I think you did a good job on interpreting these ads too. It's interesting how advertisement companies push certain qualities on both men and women. Even the funny commercials have a message.

  3. I like how you interpreted these ads, I think it works to tell these products because it's making men relate, or wish they could relate to the guys in them. Whether its being funny or physically fit. Nice analysis!

  4. I think this all connects also to masculinity, especially since it has been ingrained in us what masculinity is all about because of the media. Also the way they advertise makes us laugh or more comfortable such as the Old Spice ad. It gives a sense of humor and a human side to them, not just trying to sell their products.
