Assignment 3- Formal Analysis

- There is a young girl depicted with a cute, curly hairstyle, wearing a white ruffled dress.
- She is hugging a white, fluffy teddy bear with her left hand- which is delicatly placed around its upper-mid section.
- Her hair is a deep brown with lighter highlights (natural looking), and her complextion is light and slightly rosey.
- She has a serious, focused expression on her face and her eyes seem to be drawing the audience in, with a sense of sex appeal shining through. Her lips are slightly pursed as if somewhat in a 'kissy face' manner.
- There is text that gives the name of the product, followed by the phrase "Because innocence is sexier than you think." The text is also white, distinguishing it from the dark background. The text is towards the top of the image, overlaying the upper part of her hair.
- A smaller image of a series of pink bottles (containing the product) is layered on top of the picture of the girl in the lower right-hand corner.
- The background is a darker shade of greenish-gray that contrasts the white of the girls dress, bear, and the text. Her eyes appear to be a similar shade and tone as the background, which makes them pop out and tie together the image sucessfully.

- The image is in the form of a cartoon drawing of a motherly-looking female figure holding up a shining clean pot over the stove. The woman is shown from the waist up, and is turned over her shoulder to look into the camera.
- The woman has a pale, rosey complextion, and is caracaturly thin. Her eyes are bright blue, and her eyebrows are distinct and shaped. She has light red/orangeish hair that is pulled back in a neat ponytail held together by a green bow. Her shirt is light green and she is wearing a white apron, tied in the back. She is wearing a white pearl earing, and bright red lipstick.
- Her facial expression is excited and cheerful with wide eyes and a big grin.
- She is standing near an oven, above which a few pots and pans are hanging, and there is a kettle on the stove. She is holding up a circluar-shaped pot with a handle and a lid. All of the kitchen appears very clean, shiny, modern, and metallic.
-There is text at the top of the image that reads "Let SOS help lighten your household chores!" The letters SOS are big, bold, and underlined in a bright red color, contrasting to the rest of the text thats light blue and the very pale-green background. The red letters pop out, and connect with the bright red rectangle of color behind the image of the stove and pots.
- There are a couple paragraphs of small text (in green and pink) underneath the cartoon of the woman and her kitchen.
- In the bottom right hand corner of the advertisement there is an image of a bright yellow SOS pads box with the same bright, large, SOS letters as at the top of the page. There is a feminine hand reaching into the box which is pouring out a few pink pads.

Similarities between the images:
- Each image focuses on one female (the Snappy Stories ad is the only with more than one character at all, but the rest are in the background of the focal girl). No men are depicted in any of the images I have chosen to analyse.
- All of the females are thin, light skinned with rosey cheeks, and showing alittle skin. They all have some modest accesories included, like earings, bracelets, rings.. but not at all in excess, and hardly even noticable upon a glance. Simplicity is of much importance in their wardrobes and accesories.
- In each image, the product is smaller than the character, and is offset so as to focus on the female.
- All of the women have wavy or curly hair that seems perfectly in place, but somewhat effortless at the same time.
- The background tends to be darker than the colors associated with the woman herself, to contrast eachother and make the body of the woman pop out of the image. The female figures seem to certainly be the focal points of each advertisement.
- The hands of the women are delicate and cocked (either toward or away from herself)
- The final three images depict women looking off from the camera with their heads tilted to the side, and a definite sense of gentleness and kindness.
- The text is either above, below, or to the side of the women, but never covering any part of their faces or bodies.
- White is a commonly occuring color within each image. Also, yellow/gold seems to occur often, and even some blueish green shades.

  1. When i saw these images, the first thing that came to mind was the idea of women being trapped in households as at home mothers/wives etc. Was this a message you were trying to portray? i think due to the style used to create the images, as well as the message portrayed:"Keep her where she belongs..." hints at this idea. It also came to me that with this idea of women being "trapped" in the household that S.O.S was an interesting brand...?
